Amir Johnson, left, appeared in 62 games with 24 starts for the Pistons, averaging 3.5 points and 3.7 rebounds.AUBURN HILLS -- The Detroit Pistons will have even more money to spend on free agents this summer after a three-team trade Tuesday that sent Amir Johnson to Milwaukee in exchange for Fabricio Oberto.

San Antonio had sent Oberto, Bruce Bowen and Kurt Thomas to the Bucks for swingman Richard Jefferson.

"I think this will be a great situation for Amir," said Bill Duffy, Johnson's agent. "(Milwaukee Bucks GM) John Hammond really pushed for him, which is something we talked to Amir about. He's going to a team that really wants him.

"He learned a lot while he was in Detroit. He grew up as a player in Detroit, and that was a great experience for him. But this is a great situation for him to be going to."

For the Pistons, the trade gives them added flexibility when dealing with potential free agents.

Oberto is in the final year of a contract worth $3.5 million. However, Detroit probably will waive him and then be on the hook for the guaranteed portion of his contract, which is worth $1.8 million -- a savings of more than $1 million.

The exact salary cap for the 2009-10 season will not be set until sometime next month, but the Pistons will be among the few teams with significant salary-cap space to pursue free agents.

When Detroit finished a disastrous 39-43 season, Johnson was among the players most likely to be traded. After spending his first three seasons as a seldom-used backup, the 22-year-old worked his way into the role of a starter.

He appeared in 62 games with 24 starts, averaging 3.5 points and 3.7 rebounds. But as the season wore on, Johnson's role gradually diminished. Once the playoffs arrived, he was a non-factor. Detroit was swept in the first round by Cleveland. Johnson played a total of just 13 minutes in the series.

Duffy said Johnson will benefit from a fresh start in Milwaukee as well as a familiar face in Hammond, who is a former vice president of basketball operations in Detroit.

"John knows him and believes in him, that's why he pursued him," Duffy said. "John has confidence in him, and for a young player such as Amir, that's important. It's amazing what a little confidence can do for a young player."

The Pistons shed Amir's $3 million dollar contract and waive Oberto to get anywhere from $19 - 21 million under the upcoming salary cap.

Nice. :jam2:

I hope Amir does well, but he was given every chance to succeed with Detroit.

And he didn't take it.

The Spurs'-Bucks' angle is here.

What's your take on Fabricio Oberto? I can't say one way or the other if that's a good fit.

Oberto is a veteran retread with a $4 million contract only half of which is guaranteed.

The Pistons will waive him, add that total to their cap space, and he will likely return to the Spurs as a free agent.

It's another great financial move by Dumars.

When he tenders an offer to, say, Villanueva or Millsap, he can still have plenty to through at Ben Gordon. It also helps that he's cooled off on Boozer, leaving him free to concentrate on Gordon and Turkoglu. Boozer hasn't opted out yet because his agent hasn't detected a great market for him.

Gotchya -- now I have to ask what they would do with Rip, Gordon, Stuckey and Bynum? I suppose it makes sense that the young talent comes off the bench -- but for how long if they are the future for the Pistons.

If the Pistons get Gordon, the plan is to let Rip (if he's not traded) split his minutes between two guard and backing up Tayshaun Prince at small forward. Rip has been a backup small forward for the last few years, so he's not uncomfortable with it.

Dumars is willing to trade Prince and Rip for good value that will improve the Pistons, but he won't give them away for pennies on the dollar. The chemistry has been altered, and he wants to let the young new blood learn from Prince and Rip what it means to win and be Pistons.

Gotchya, thanks -- where do you see Rip going if he does get moved? What is a good fit?

It's pretty fluid right now. Prince and/or Rip could be involved in a trade for a quality big man like, say, Chris Kaman.

Tyson Chandler's name has been thrown about, too. But his injuries this season have given Dumars a pause.

Offhand, I don't know what interest the Clippers and Hornets would have for Prince and/or Rip, but both are motivated to move Kaman and Chandler.
