Should Pistons Play for the Playoffs or the Draft?

Should Pistons Play for the Playoffs or the Draft?

Postby Piston Boris on Thu Dec 03, 2009 11:42 pm

From MLive.com Full Court Press:
When teams struggle, as the Pistons are, the question always comes up: if the team is going nowhere, wouldn't they be better served trying to get a high draft pick?

It's unpopular, but my opinion is always a staunch 'no way.' And it's really simple why: once teams cross that threshold into the draft lottery, they don't just stay there for a year. It is often prolonged futility and several years where the only thing to look forward to is ping pong balls.

In the last 15 drafts, only three teams have made just one trip to the draft lottery and immediately had their fortunes change.

[...]

Is it more important for the Pistons to bank on pretty small odds (remember, four of those 20 guys mentioned above were all from one draft class) of finding a star player in the draft, or is it more important to continue making the playoffs, even if it results in a first round sweep, keep young players versed in winning and keep fans coming to games (I know attendance is bad regardless, but imagine if it gets to the second half and the Pistons are only going to win 20 games or so ... it will get much worse)?

That's not to say good players don't get taken in the lottery, but the Pistons have a team with good players. Teams full of good players don't necessarily win in the superstar-dominated NBA (the 2004 title team an obvious exception). The Pistons are in a unique situation because they used virtually all of their cap space. They have players in Rip Hamilton, Tayshaun Prince and Jason Maxiell whose contracts make it more difficult to move them and improve through trades. Is the only way for them to infuse talent through the draft and, if so, is the best way to do that sneaking into the lottery?

I'm not sure there's an easy answer, but I've never been convinced it serves a team well to play for lottery position, and the results above show that it's very hard to win with that strategy.

Should the Pistons tank their season for John Wall?

Who can guarantee that he'll become a superstar, much less a capable NBA caliber player?

These young Pistons need to go to the playoffs and get postseason experience under their belts as a group.

And seeing how Dumars struck gold in the last draft, I can see him and his staff doing well with a pick from 15-20 in the next draft.

Play for the playoffs!!!

I can't stand losing just to try to get a number one pick who may or may not pan out, especially in the 2010 draft, which doesn't look that loaded with future stars.

Playoffs!

I don't like the idea to tank a season. Tank the season is bad sportmanship!

A team must always have the will to win every game! Even when starting 0-18 then they should have the goal to end the season 64-18. Even if this is unrealistic. They have to play for a win.

No matter how badly the Pistons tank, there's absolutely no way they land John Wall (unless they get a VERY lucky lottery ball). They are a young team and are going through the motions and are hitting bumps along the way. You can't rebuild a team in one year, though. It will probably take a couple more years (or whenever they have significant cap space available again) to build through draft, trade, and free agency before they can rise back to the ranks of the elite. I don't expect them to miss the playoffs, but in an increasingly-tough East that has 3 championship contenders and another one trying to join their ranks, they will be hard-pressed to make it past the first round.

That being said, playing for next year/the draft is a terrible idea. Look at the Knicks as a perfect example. They did all they could to clear cap space for two max free agents and tank their season last year, and unless they can move the horrible contracts of Eddy Curry or Jared Jeffries, they will only be able to sign one, and that's after they let two of their best players, Nate Robinson and David Lee, walk. This is all thanks to the lowering of the salary cap that was announced towards the end of last season.
