Pistons eye ex-Magic coach Brian Hill for lead assistant spot
By VINCE ELLIS • FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER • July 14, 2009

LAS VEGAS – The Pistons are expected to add another assistant coach to their staff and one of the candidates will be former NBA head coach Brian Hill.

Holdover assistants Pat Sullivan and Darrell Walker, who are both coaching the summer-league team, are assured spots on new coach John Kuester’s staff, but the franchise is in the market for a lead assistant and Hill would fit the bill.

Currently an assistant for the New Jersey Nets, Hill was the head coach for Orlando for two separate stints. Kuester was on Hill’s Magic staff during the 2006-07 season.

If hired, Hill would bring more than 30 years of experience to the Pistons bench. Kuester was picked last week to replace Michael Curry, who was fired after one season.

As far as the other assistants on Curry’s staff, Dave Cowens will be a special assistant for Joe Dumars next season and it appears unlikely that Harold Ellis will return.

If I'm not mistaken, Hill led the Magic with Shaq to their first NBA Finals.

I don't have a problem with him providing steady support to Kuester on the sidelines.

Go Pistons.

Kuester and Hill were both assistants together in New Jersey for the 2004-05 campaign. Hill has been credited with stabilizing Lawrence Frank's run with the Nets. He's a good basketball coach. The Pistons, in my humble opinion, offer more possiblility for growth than do the Nets. I foresee him taking charge of making Kuester a great motivator in addition to his Xs and Os.

I've heard that Hill is credited for doing good work as an assistant.

I was surprised, though that Cowens left the bench. He apparently has other aspirations. Hill should do well for the team on the sidelines.

Is he hired yet? I'd love to see him headline the staff.
