Pistons and Palace for sale?

Pistons and Palace for sale?

Postby bullsger on Mon Jan 18, 2010 11:51 am

By Chris McCosky (Detroit News)

Detroit -- It is possible, perhaps even likely, that within this decade the Red Wings and Pistons will partner to build and share a sports arena in downtown Detroit, sources told The Detroit News.

Mike and Marian Ilitch, owners of the Red Wings, have not renewed their lease at Joe Louis Arena beyond this season, and face more than $10 million in structural repair at the dilapidated arena this summer if the team is to play there next season.

Going back to the Joe, it seems, is a last resort. So the Ilitches have been looking for a temporary home while they sort out, if, when, where and how they might build a new arena in downtown Detroit.

[...]

In the meantime, Pistons owner Karen Davidson seriously is considering selling the Pistons and Palace Sports and Entertainment. She already has had a conversation with NBA commissioner David Stern on the process and protocol for attracting potential buyers. Once she sells, there would be nothing keeping the Pistons tethered to The Palace.

Bad news. :man4: :man6:

As long as the Pistons end up with an owner who'll take care of them, I fine with that.

It'll take a lot to uproot them from the Palace to play downtown. And it'd be a long process.

IMHO, in this economy, I don't see the odds being that great of the Pistons being moved from the suburbs back to the city.

It's sad that the Davidson-era ownership of the Detroit Pistons is coming to an end. According to the newspapers, the Pistons are being sold in the worst-possible atmosphere. The team is down-trodden, the team is no longer selling-out games, and the economy hasn't recovered. That could cause the 460-million-dollar franchise to be sold for 380-350 million. In short, Mrs. Davidson looks desperate. This indicates a quick sale, and that means that it's possible the team would move. That's a nightmare, but it seems to be where this team is headed because it seems that they would sell to the group that could put together the best financial package. Considering the state of Detroit, I can't see it coming from our hometown. This is a sad day. It looks hasty.
