The Pistons are 1-1 in the 2010 Preseason with an opening 105-89 loss at Miami and a 115-110 OT win over Milwaukee at the Palace.
The Pistons played better in the second game than in the first, but their collective ball-handling and defense need to improve. The Pistons need to improve in every area: post defense, perimeter, pick-and-roll, and transition.
Charlie Villanueva and Ben Gordon are making an effort to make the small plays. Neither will be expected to make the All NBA defensive team, but if they don’t blow their assignments, they can help keep the team defense intact. Greg Monroe has had a number of defensive lapses in the first two games. As he adjusts to the NBA game, though, he should improve. He has also shown a tendency to pick up fouls quickly that has to be curbed so that he can stay on the court and contribute.
A serious blow to the Pistons rebounding and defensive game is the loss of Jonas Jerebko, who partially ruptured his right Achilles heel in a hard fall in the opening minutes of the Miami loss. With successful surgery,
Jerebko is expected to return within 5-6 months. Fortunately, the tear is partial, he is only 23, and he is in the excellent hands of the Pistons trainer guru Arnie Kander....
