Detroit Pistons Las Vegas Summer League game 5 wrap up Posted by Dave Dial July 17, 2009 22:30PM
The Detroit Pistons beat the Cleveland Cavaliers in their final summer league game 92-86, finishing their Las Vegas Summer League schedule with a 4-1 record.
July 17, NBA.com: The Detroit Pistons closed out their visit to the 2009 NBA Summer League presented by EA SPORTS with a 4-1 record after defeating the Cleveland Cavaliers (1-4), 92-86, Friday afternoon at the COX Pavilion in Las Vegas.
The Pistons entered the fourth quarter trailing by four at 68-64, but slowly kept pace before overtaking the Cavaliers just 3:49 into the frame for the ninth and final lead change of the game. A three-pointer by Jonas Jerebko put his squad up for good and helped them extend the lead to as much as nine down the stretch. Jerebko had nine fourth-quarter points, while Austin Daye chipped in 10 to aid the come-from-behind win. Daye led all scorers with 20 points, while notching a double-double by adding 10 rebounds to his stat line. Jerebko followed closely behind with 19 points of his own.
"For the game, we jumped out great in the first quarter, the guys played very well," said Pistons Summer League Head Coach, Pat Sullivan. "The second quarter was the complete opposite, David Harrison kind of had his way with us and was so physical. Unfortunately for them, he got kicked out which helped us. Our guys really responded in the fourth quarter, Austin Daye, [Jeremy] Pargo, Jonas [Jerebko], all our guys played extremely well to close out the game which was nice."
This game was the closest game of the summer league action, after the Pistons got off to a big first quarter lead they floundered in the second quarter, but got things together and maintained a close game before pulling away at the end.
While Summers scored 12 points, he also fouled out of the game with 10 fouls. This is the second time in five games Summers has fouled out, which looks like one of the aspects of his game he needs to work on. In the three other games he did not have excessive fouling and looked great, but in the two games he fouled out in he did not play well.
Overall, Summers had a very good summer league showing, as has Austin Daye, who has turned into a double-double machine the last few games. Both were named as two of Coach Thorpe's to ten 'rookie performers in summer league'. With Summers #7 and Daye #8.
Here are the final statistics for the Pistons Las Vegas Summer League players.
The Pistons top rookies in the 2009 draft all had very good showings and have Piston fans and coaches expecting good things from all three. If not next season, then soon after. The point guard battle still seems between Jeremy Pargo and Sean Singletary, with both having good final games.
Here is the final standings for the Las Vegas Summer League.
That wraps up the LVSL, all that's left now is for Joe Dumars and the coaches to evaluate the players and decide who is going to make the team, or get a training camp invite. Dumars will set the roster over the next month and then make the final decisions after training camp. Stay tuned...
Wow. This was perhaps the best and most relevant Pistons' Summer League in years.
All of the Pistons 2009 picks (Austin Daye, DaJuan Blair, and Jonas Jerebko) look like they can stick with the team and contribute along with 2008 pick Deron Washington. Too bad Trent Plaisted got hurt overseas last year and has to spend another season developing.
I have the impression he has the same skill set as Jerebko. I hope Plaisted does well in Europe this year and I'll look forward to seeing him try out for the Pistons next year.
I wonder whether Singleton or Pargo will come to training camp. Either one can be good, but there won't be a lot of minutes to go around since the Pistons' backcourt is so stacked.
I can hardly wait for training camp and the preseason.
