Not just another game!
Sunday, August 23 I was at the Palace for a Detroit Shock game. However – it was not just another day or just another game. For me it was a special time filled with many great events.
Early in the afternoon the Palace was opened to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation as they held their first ever “Climb to the Cure” fundraiser. Participants climbed the 900 steps of the Palace. I arrived late, but was still granted the opportunity to climb as many steps as I wanted and to join others on the court and shoot some baskets on the very court where the Shock and the Pistons play. Following this we had an excellent meal which allowed me additional time to hang out with Shock Fans and make new friends.
Following the wonderful meal - I headed out to the Parking Lot and watched as awesome crew from the Palace turned the Parking Lot into the “Shockfest Celebration”. Inflatables, shooting baskets, games, giveaways – so much for the kids (yes and for those of us who refuse to grow up). The local fire companies, police and emergency assistance vehicles were there for everyone to see, ask questions. The National Guard was even on site with the climbing wall. The Shock and the folks of the Palace went all out to make it a special time for anyone who stopped by.
Then back in to the Palace to watch the Detroit Shock play the San Antonio Stars. I had a great seat and enjoyed watching Coach Mahorn as he instructed the girls during the warm-ups and shoot arounds. I think he is going to do an excellent job as the head coach. It has been a transition as he was more the “buddy” before, but he has the respect of the girls and great basketball knowledge. You could see the bond between them.
Becky Hammond was very kind as the Stars came out for shoot-arounds. She stopped and spoke with some young girls and allowed them to take pictures. When the game starts – I’ll show her no love, but I do admire the way the players will relate to the fans, especially for the young. The never seem too busy or too important to say “Hi” to a fan or give some encouragement to young folks.
I was honored to have Piston Boris join me for the game. I invited him to the game as I am always trying to get more fans for the WNBA. Hoping the game will be proof the ladies play great ball also.
Alexis Hornbuckels mother sang the National Anthem to open the game. I tell you – the lady can sing – some of us thought we were in church! We were fighting the urge to shout “Amen” when she was done. It was also very sweet to see Alexis standing there watching her mom sing. It was a great moment you just want to treasure. Then on to the introductions. With the traditional ball exchange which the Shock does with the introductions, there were military personnel on the court who received an autographed team ball from each player and a standing ovation from the crowd. The respect and honor the Palace gives to the Military members and their families always has me fighting back tears.
Finally, the game starts. It was a great game. We took the lead – the Stars fought back --- we fought harder and the victory was the Shock’s! Taj McWilliams scored her 4000 point during the game and has been added to the 4000 club. The ladies played with great energy, focus and commitment. It was a great game.
Now today the Shock traveled to Connecticut and played another great game and beat the Suns. I know many do not believe me when I say this, but the number 4 spot is STILL in our reach and don’t ever count my Detroit Shock out! Looks like another interesting end of the season is brewing again. Any time you think it’s impossible, just remember one year ago. I never give up on the Detroit Shock!
