I for one nominate the Detroit Piston backcourt as this season's best
and deepest.
When healthy, the Pistons have four players capable of starting and averaging 20 points per game: Richard Hamilton, Rodney Stuckey, Ben Gordon, and Will Bynum.
All bring something different to the table, being able to score in different ways and preventing teams from loading one side of the court defensively, forcing them to pick their poison.
Hamilton is a deadly mid-range shooter who moves well without the ball and is adept at passing to his teammates, especially the big men.
Gordon is averaging a bit over 40% from the 3 point line. He can create off the dribble and also catch and shoot. He's able to work with a variety of players, and is displaying an all around game with Detroit unlike in Chicago, where he was primarily tasked to be a scorer. He's sharing playmaking duties and defending well under Kuester's tutelage. He plays well either as a starter or a reserve and is currently 10th in the NBA in scoring with 24 points per game. He's one of the league's elite scorers.
Stuckey is a big, young, athletic guard with an improving mid and long range jump shot, the ability to take it to the rim, is an excellent rebounder, and can defend small forwards in the Pistons' 3 guard lineup. He's also driven to receive an invitation to the Team USA camp next summer.
Bynum is the latest low profile, high impact acquisition by Dumars. Signed out of Europe, Bynum at 5'11" is an excellent finisher and dunker with an improved midrange jumpshot. He comes off the bench to provide energy and ramp up the game's tempo.
Also, both Stuckey and Bynum are receiving a lot of instruction from Coach Kuester on the nuances of playing point guard a la Dean Smith and Larry Brown.
Chucky Atkins made the team on a nonguaranteed training camp invitation. He's also mentoring Stuckey and Bynum. And when needed, he can provide veteran leadership at the point and 3 point shooting.
