I wondered which NBA backcourt or backcourts felt were the best this season?

I for one nominate the Detroit Piston backcourt as this season's best and deepest.

When healthy, the Pistons have four players capable of starting and averaging 20 points per game: Richard Hamilton, Rodney Stuckey, Ben Gordon, and Will Bynum.

All bring something different to the table, being able to score in different ways and preventing teams from loading one side of the court defensively, forcing them to pick their poison.

Hamilton is a deadly mid-range shooter who moves well without the ball and is adept at passing to his teammates, especially the big men.

Gordon is averaging a bit over 40% from the 3 point line. He can create off the dribble and also catch and shoot. He's able to work with a variety of players, and is displaying an all around game with Detroit unlike in Chicago, where he was primarily tasked to be a scorer. He's sharing playmaking duties and defending well under Kuester's tutelage. He plays well either as a starter or a reserve and is currently 10th in the NBA in scoring with 24 points per game. He's one of the league's elite scorers.

Stuckey is a big, young, athletic guard with an improving mid and long range jump shot, the ability to take it to the rim, is an excellent rebounder, and can defend small forwards in the Pistons' 3 guard lineup. He's also driven to receive an invitation to the Team USA camp next summer.

Bynum is the latest low profile, high impact acquisition by Dumars. Signed out of Europe, Bynum at 5'11" is an excellent finisher and dunker with an improved midrange jumpshot. He comes off the bench to provide energy and ramp up the game's tempo.

Also, both Stuckey and Bynum are receiving a lot of instruction from Coach Kuester on the nuances of playing point guard a la Dean Smith and Larry Brown. :jam2:

Chucky Atkins made the team on a nonguaranteed training camp invitation. He's also mentoring Stuckey and Bynum. And when needed, he can provide veteran leadership at the point and 3 point shooting.

I'd like to see the Piston backcourt raise its team assist totals, but it looks like this new team has a deeper backcourt than the Bad Boys.

Kobe pretty much makes the Lakers' backcourt go. No one in LA's crazy about it, but the other guards are role players.

Other backcourts I think are really good are: Portland, San Antonio, Washington, and Atlanta.

Portland’s combo of Andre Miller and Brandon Roy is tough. Miller's a great floor general and B. Roy's the second best 2 guard behind Black Mamba. Steve Blake is a quality backup and Jerryd Bayless and Martell Webster are lottery picks. Rudy Fernandez will add to his 10 ppg last season. And there's 20-year-old Nicolas Batum.

Tony Parker is one of the best PGs anywhere, but he's got a bad ankle like Rip and is day-to-day. Richard Jefferson helps the Spurs a lot, taking the scoring burden off of the Spurs big three. If Manu Ginobili stays healthy, the Spurs backcourt will be murder, too.

The Wiz have a deep and talented backcourt but there may be too many good players and just one ball to go around. Gilbert Arenas and Caron Butler need their 20 shots and the others have to accept being role players. Arenas is healthy so far, but the Wiz have been really out of synch so far this season. We'll have to see if Flip Saunders can sort things out.

The Hawks backcourt runs on Mike Bibby, who's a good floor leader and gets his teammates involved. Joe Johnson gets open shots thanks to Bibby. Jamal Crawford's not a great defender, but he's been red hot for the Hawks.
Anybody want some Magic Johnson?
