Ainge needs Rondo alright, but he overpaid for a pg who just hasn't developed his jumper.
Guess you haven't watched him play because his game has grown up a whole lot since last season. Rondo is generally concidered a top 5 PG and he will be paid as such. People tend to only focus on what he doesn't do well which is one thing...shoot from the perimeter(much improved though) rather then all the things he does better then anyone else at his position. It's funny how that goes. He's the best man on defender among PG's my a wide margin, he's a great passer and has a great handle who rarely turns the ball over. He back down from no one and seems to have his best games against opposing elite PG's. He's got an outstanding BBIQ. He's the best rebounding PG in the game. He's probably the quickest player in the NBA and his speed with the ball in his possession is unparalleled. With all of those things he does well the only thing people tend to want to talk about is his jump shot. It's kind of ridiculous.
Then there are those who say he is only as good as the players around him. Another observation from people who dont watch the Celtics play often enough. Rondo is making the jobs on the BIg Three easier by getting them lay ups, dunks and wide open shots in their sweet spots. Rondo takes the pressure off of the big three because with him they don't have to create shots themselves he does it for them.
Rondo's contract is right about where it should be and he would have been offered more next off season if Ainge didn't get him locked up now. Rajon Rondo has improved his game in each of his seasons in the NBA and if he continues to do so he will be underpaid in about 2 years time with three years left on his contract.
Taking your point that Rondo plays well against elite pgs, then when he faced Orlando in last year's Eastern semi-conference match he tailed off and had his penetration limited by the Magic defense cause he wasn't facing an elite #1 guard in Rafer Alston.
Rondo definitely has chemistry with the rest of the Celtic team, but I wonder how well he'd do if he was on a team that didn't have so many scoring options? Tough to say till it happens. He has improved some as a shooter, but not enough to make me sweat when he's left unguarded.
But there's an article hereabouts by a Boston journalist who talks about Rondo's shot, which I found interesting. I'll dig it up.
It's safe to say you've seen more Boston games than I have, but I've seen a fair number. I've got January 31, 2009 and February 18, 2009 penciled on my calendar to add to my count.
