Detroit 110
New Orleans 104
Box ScoreThe Pistons now have a 2 game winning streak going.
Richard Hamilton (32 points, 10 assists, 3 rebounds, 3 steals) carried the Pistons throughout the game. His points and assists were season highs. His legs appear to be coming back to him.
Rodney Stuckey (13 points, 4 assists, 2 rebounds) played tired and with hurt knees, but made an impact in overtime and won the game for Detroit.
The Pistons had lost 13 of their last 15 games, while the Hornets, had won seven of their last eight games.
Stuckey had five points in regulation before turning in an outstanding performance in overtime. He scored 8 points, including two consecutive 3 point plays to put the Pistons over the top.
Hamilton also came up big in overtime, stripping David West, when he had the chance to tie the game for the Hornets. Hamilton was fouled at the other end and made both free throws, giving the Pistons a 109-104 lead.
After Chucky Atkins fouled out (9 points and 4 assists, including 3 triples) in the fourth quarter, Jonas Jerebko (13 points, 2 assists, 8 rebounds) ran the point for a spell. Stuckey volunteered to go back in despite feeling under the weather.
Ben Wallace was another standout with 13 points, 21 rebounds, five assists and two blocked shots.
Charlie Villanueva had 13 points (1 triple) and seven rebounds, while Austin Daye (2 triples) scored 12 points.
The Pistons came into the game averaging 17.3 assists, 29th in the NBA. But they had 10 in the first quarter, 16 in the first half and 27 for the game to lead New Orleans, which had 25.
In this game, the Pistons were the aggressors from the start and led by as much as 18 points in the first quarter. The finished the first quarter, leading 31-16, playing one of their best quarters of this season so far.
New Orleans eventually battled over the last 3 quarters to take their first lead since scoring the game's first basket when Chris Paul (24 points, 14 assists, 5 rebounds) hit a triple with about eight minutes left in the game.
Paul tied the game in regulation at 96, living up to his hype as the Isiah Thomas of the present.
At this point in his career, Paul has career averages of 19 ppg and 10 assists, virtually matching Thomas' 20 ppg and 10 assists. IMHO, he doesn't quite have Thomas' ball handling flair, but I'm not complaining.
The Pistons had the ball with the game tied 96-96 and 24.9 seconds left in regulation. But a Hamilton shot fell short and the Pistons couldn’t quite tap the ball in before time ran out.
David West had 25 points and nine rebounds to lead New Orleans. Marcus Thornton and Peja Stojakovic added 13 points each for New Orleans.
Hopefully, Detroit can build on this game when they face the Knicks at the Palace on Saturday.
